Monthly intelligence on how your products appear in AI-generated answers — Amazon Rufus, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Shopping, and Claude Commerce.
Perplexity Shopping launched with limited fanfare in Q1 2026, but by May the platform is quietly reshaping how brands think about AI search visibility. Based on our AI search data scraping pipeline: Perplexity Shopping now handles an estimated 8.2 million commercial queries per month globally — up from 2.1 million in January. The kicker: Perplexity's citation model is more transparent than any competitor, making it the easiest AI platform to reverse-engineer for visibility strategy.
Our analysis of 8,400 shopping queries across three major AI platforms reveals distinct citation preferences. Understanding these differences is essential for brands allocating content investment. Insights below come from our Rufus response scraping and AI Overview monitoring infrastructure.
| Citation Signal | Perplexity | Amazon Rufus | Google AIO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent expert reviews | Very High | Medium | Very High |
| Retailer review volume | Medium | Very High | Medium |
| Reddit / forum mentions | Very High | Low | High |
| Brand website content | High | Low | High |
| PDP content depth | Medium | Very High | Medium |
| Recency signals | High | Medium | Very High |
1. Reddit Wins Perplexity
In 68% of Perplexity Shopping responses we tracked, at least one Reddit thread was cited. Brands with active, organic Reddit conversation (product-specific subreddits, r/BuyItForLife recommendations, category communities) are cited 2.9x more often than brands with no meaningful Reddit presence. Paid promotion won't work here — genuine community discussion does.
2. Rufus Rewards Review Volume + Recency
Amazon's Rufus AI heavily favors products with high review counts (>2,000) AND recent review velocity (>50 reviews per month). Old products with historical reviews but no fresh flow are systematically demoted. This means aged Amazon bestsellers can lose Rufus citations even as their overall Amazon rank stays stable.
3. Google AIO's Freshness Bias
Google AI Overviews strongly prefers content updated within the last 90 days. Brand blog posts, comparison articles, and PDP updates from within that window get cited disproportionately. Static product content ages out of Google AIO visibility faster than any other AI platform.
This month's category focus: kitchen appliances. We ran 340 AI shopping queries across Perplexity, Rufus, and Google AIO for products in this category. The winners:
